Today's daily shootings news is from North Carolina, Texas and California.

A student at Coastal Carolina University has died after a shooting near the campus in Conway, NC.

Anthony Darnell Liddell, 19,  of Bennettsville died after the shooting at University Place residence hall. Police are hunting the shooter who fired four or five shots about 7:30 p,m,. Tuesday.

A public school employee was  shot and wounded  near Tyler, TX, during a  training session aimed toward arming school district employees. A student and a gun safety instructor were working with a malfunctioning weapon when it misfired.  The bullet struck a school maintenance worker in the leg.

A statement from the schools superintendent said, "The accident will not affect the district’s decision, in light of the Sandy Hook massacre and other school shootings, to arm employees."

Yesterday, two police officers were shot to death in Santa Cruz, CA.  A resident describes Santa Cruz as "a peaceful community of artists and hippies and vegans." 

The alleged killer of Sergeant Loren (Butch) Baker  and his partner, Detective Elizabeth Butler,  had previous arrests for sexual assault and carrying a concealed weapon. The San Jose Mercury News reports that he had three guns registered to him, including a .40-caliber semi-automatic Sig Sauer.

More than 2,000 Americans have died by gunshot since Sandy Hook.

Today's daily U.S. shooting deaths took place in Las Vegas.

Occupants of a black Range Rover shot up a Masarati which crashed into a taxi that burst into flames.  The episode left three persons dead and at least three others injured.  It took place at 4:30 a.m. at an intersection on The Strip surrounded by some of the most famous casinos in town, including the Bellagio, Caesars Palace and Bally's.

Our daily dose of death by gunfire brought the total of Ameicans shot to death since Sandy Hook to well over 2,000.

Thank Mr. LaPierre for fighting so hard to maintain his version of the Second Amendment, which gives everyone -- not just owners of black Range Rovers -- the "right" to bear arms.  After all, it's the brave patriots of his cockamamie organization who keep our nation safe from . . .er,  "bad guys."

You do feel safer, don't you?  Or have you already canceled your planned trip to Vegas? If you absolutely have to roll them dice, play high stakes poker or toss next week's grocery money onto a roulette table, you can buy body armor online. But don't think you can take shelter at your nearest courthouse, campus, shopping mall or church.  Some of the aforementioned 2.000 victims died at such places.

Our gun-toters are equal-opportunity killers.

This is The State of the Union

The union is still intact but the state of the nation is dismal.  Since Presidents are not required to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth in their annual report to the citizens, here are some things Dr. Kidglove will not say tonight.

Our head of state violates his oath to uphold the Constitution daily. He has arrogated to himself the divine right of kings, the power of life and death over his subjects.  He has repealed, by executive whim, habeas corpus, the Posse Comitatus Act, and the First, Fourth, Sixth and Eighth amendments to the Constitution.

He deploys troops, tortures, orders attacks, invades, occupies and conducts secret raids and missions that violate treaties to which the United States is signatory, the Geneva Conventions, United Nations articles and United States laws. Many of the policies and actions of the United States meet the definition of war crimes.

The President has advocated policies and signed laws that have widened the gulf between the very  rich (about two per cent of Americans) and poor (about 20 per cent) and virtually destroyed the American middle class.

We have tolerated abuses of the Second Amendment to the point  that the nation has become one big armed camp.  Since "legal" weapons were used to slaughter 22 innocent children in Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Conn.,  gunshots have killed 1,900 more Americans, including two slain yesterday near the University of Maryland campus.

We have nurtured a culture of secondary citizenship for women.  Some states have claimed the right to invade women's reproductive organs by requiring vaginal ultrasound examinations before allowing certain health procedures to take place.  One state, New Mexico, is considering a law that would hold a woman guilty of felonious destruction of evidence for terminating  a pregnancy resulting from rape.  A judge in another state ruled the victim to be at fault when she was sexually abused by a police officer. 

The United States has refused to support worldwide efforts to slow the rate of climate change that is destroying ecosystems, changing habitat, warming the earth, melting polar ice and threatening the well-being of creatures great and small.

We are subsidizing the growth and profits of extraction industries whose products fill the atmosphere with destructive carbons, while refusing to encourage development of sources of sustainable energy. We export gas from fracking which destroys water sources even as the country suffers an epic continuing drought.

We have declared corporations to be "people" and given them unprecedented power over our government, while systematically repealing the constitutional rights guaranteed to individual citizens.  Yet our rate of economic growth is one-fifth of that of the Third World despite record corporate profits.

We have the poorest, yet most expensive, health care in the industrialized world. The quality of our educational system is plummeting even as our politicians demand further cuts in funding it because of a mythical "national debt problem."

The most celebrated of our academic experts on economics advocate strengthening the social safety net and increasing public spending to create jobs, while our elected officials pursue austerity policies that  cause troubled economies to fail even more egregiously.

We nurture an unrealistic, myth-driven national self image as a superpower operating on a high moral plane, while the rest of the world sees us as a rogue nation complicit in virtually every failed and oppressive policy in the global scheme of things. We think we are a democracy but we are a nation on the brink of becoming a  fascist oligarchy and police state.

And that is the real state of the union.

We Need a New Financial Responsibility Act

Dr.  Kidglove, who backpedals better than most NBA point guards, seems to have dropped the assault weapon ban from his post-massacre strategy on gun control.  Some self-designated experts on the issue say that's OK because the assault-weapon ban is a red herring anyway.  The important thing, they say, is to ban large-capacity magazines.

Whatever.

Perhaps bans and endless arguments over the original intent of the Second Amendment are all a waste of time.

How about this?

Require that all firearms in private hands -- yes, even genuine hunting weapons -- be licensed, but only after thorough background checks.  We license cars and motorcycles and doctors and fishermen and therapists and all kinds of stuff.  Why not lethal weapons?

And as a precondition for obtaining a license, require that each licensed weapon be insured: liability insurance, a minimum $5 million in compensation to families of victims killed by the insured weapon,  a range of, say,  $100,000 to $1 million in victims' compensation for anyone injured by the insured weapon.

Yes, Mr. NRA Macho Bigshot, you can keep your entire arsenal of military firepower; we'll give you, say, six months to license and buy insurance for each one.  Then go out and play Black Commando to your heart's content -- knowing that if your Navy Seal Sniper Automatic Rifle accidentally kills the farmer down the road, his widow will get $5 million from your insurance company.  (And, no doubt, your insurance will be cancelled, along with your licenses for the rest of your arsenal.)

Under our plan, after the six-month grace period, it would be a felony punishable by two years in jail and a lifetime ban from firearms licensing to carry, possess or use an unlicensed fiirearm of any kind, for any purpose.

As long as you obey the law, your precious "right" to bear arms remains inviolate. But you will be held accountable -- financially, at least -- for whatever damage your bloody guns cause, whether you're using them or someone else is.

Some gun nuts won't pay the costs of licenses and insurance, which should reduce the number of gun owners and the size of their arsenals.  Others will think twice about whether such an expensive phallic symbol really does much in the way of self-defense.  After all, weapons didn't save the self-styled Greatest American Sniper Ever, even at his second home on the shooting range.  And Machine-gun Mamas with such an investment in their guns will be motivated to keep them away from their teen-aged progeny with messed-up heads.

There would be attrition in gun ownership under this plan without the fuss of a constitutional fight over the Second Amendment.  Nobody's taking away your "right" to be Rambo.  They're simply requiring you to prove financial responsibility, just as you have to do to legally drive your pick-up truck.

The financial compensation for the wounded or the families of the slain would be simple justice. No amount of money can adequately  compensate the families of the murdered children of Sandy Hook,  but since money is the great engine of our corrupt society, let's try to make it work for the public good.

Maybe we could even persuade the health insurance companies to write these gun policies, and lower the premiums on regular health care for regular people.

Profiles in Non-Courage

In the best traditions of Dr. Kidglove, the Senate Majority Wheedler, Harry Reid of Nevada, raised the white flag before the battle had even started.

Emerging from the back room where he knelt to kiss the boots of Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader, Harry Halfheart announced another one of those Democratic "compromises" that give the Republicans more than they ever wanted.

This surrender was on so-called filibuster reform.  Reid had on the table two Democratic bills, one a milksop that would have made it only slightly more difficult for Republicans to bottle up legislation, the other a serious and fair effort to make possible genuine legislative debate in the Senate.  He had at his disposal a so-called nuclear option that would have enabled him to reform the filibuster rules with just a simple majority -- which the Democrats have.  He even threatened to use it.  This brought McConnell to the table -- with absolutely no cards in his hand.  Harry Half-Heart promptly threw his own full house on the table and declared, "I fold."

Another demonstration of how government works under a corporocratic oligarchy. An online essay today by Norman Soloman, author and founding director of the Institute for Public Accuracy, warned progressives against letting Kidglove's second inaugural address "make us the dupes of our hopes." Solomon wrote, "it was notably disingenuous for Obama to proclaim in his second inaugural speech that 'enduring security and lasting peace do not require perpetual war' -- minutes after completing a first term when his administration launched more than 20,000 airstrikes, strongly escalated the use of weaponized drones and did so much else to make war perpetual."

After running through a partial list of Kidglove's other betrayals of progressive ideals. he called upon progressivesto come together and organize militantly. He worte, "the kind of empowered access we need will come from mobilizing grassroots power."

Here are excerpts from the first few comments generated by Solomon's piece:

Pressure the president as much as you desire. . . letter, fax, email, make a phone call. The keystone XL pipeline will be built, drone warfare will continue around the world, the police state will continue unabated in the U.S.

These programs aren't being enacted because the President is being pressured by Republicans. (They) continue becausethe Democratic party accepts money from the weapons manufacturers, the prison- industrial complex and the energy companies. A banker will be the new treasury secretary because large financial interests in N.Y. want a banker to be the new treasury secretary. The Democrats  will not listen to public sentiment; they didn't listen to public sentiment on health care. Occupy Wall Street was publicly ridiculed by Democratic politicians -- before the encampments were decimated by Democratic politicians, before the message was co-opted into the 2012 campaign (so Obama could mimic the public's mood -- talking points for the president. He had every intention of promoting characters like the soon to be treasury secretary,  Jack Lew, no surprises here.

Engaging with (this Administration) is a waste of time. Support the development of the Green (or Socialist) parties in your neck of the woods. Work on initiative campaigns locally and nationally to remove money from politics and to expand ballot access to third parties and disenfranchised voters.
The Democrats will sell you down river every fucking time and they'll try to make you feel scared and guilty for being aware of their manipulative clap-trap.

The Democratic party has  been, far more often than not, the driving force for destruction of progressive policies and goals over the past 20 years . . . I'm running out of words that do justice to the insanity of it. And losing interest in taking it seriously. It's like trying to figure out how to "turn around" the Tea Party.


Without a viable third party, we might as well move north into organic communes and live humble lives of good conscience apart from the maddening crowd--forget about politics. 
Politics have proven hopeless within the bounds of the duopoly as it stands and it has not the slightest interest in changing for the better. Money controls the entire system--including elections--and progressives will NEVER out-leverage that without commanding the ballot box via a progressive party. Without that, the Dems OWN us no matter how much it pisses us off--we'll never vote Republican. It's really just that simple.
Only a progressive third party can change this shit.

We have two substantial progressive "third" parties, and several more very small ones. But we need them to work together, and we need progressives still in the Blue Party to leave and come to us. Between these three posts, we've got the problem and some real solutions in a nutshell.

Amen, brothers.  But, as Harry Half-Heart has just demonstrated once again, time and opportunity are running out.


Enisled with Their Ignorance

Somewhere in our imaginations, according to a wonderful old children's book, there is an Isle of Conclusions, which "can only be reached by jumping."

Lately that island has become crowded with ignorant Americans, eager to blame certain foreigners for their own country's decline.  Bestirred by the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Alex Jones, Glen Back, Fox Faux News, et al, they have insinuated themselves into virtually every facet of our lives, espcially in but not limited to the United States House of Representatives.

A fortnight ago, for example, in Minneapolis-St. Paul, some jumpers-to-conclusions who work for TCF bank sent letters to Iranian students at the University of Minnesota notifying them that their accounts at the bank were being closed arbitrarily. University officials are concerned in part because TCF has had a special agreement with the university. It gives the bank the exclusive right to offer checking accounts accessible with the university's photo ID card. The university makes a million dollars a year in royalties from the deal.

"To have just an answer, why such a thing is happening," said one of the affected students, in law school. "Not just that they are exercising their right, but why they are exercising their right."

TCF spokesman Jason Korstange talked circles around the answers. He said  TCF will review each student's account. and they could close the accounts sooner if they wished. In any event, the bank said, they would need to end any automatic transactions tied to the account.

The doubletalk prompted dozens of senior faculty and staff at the University to send the following letter to Jay Kosmick, TCF Vice President and Region Manager:

Our intention is not to generate ill will, but rather to urge better practices that befit an institution that works with and benefits from a diverse university community.

 First, we must express our deep disappointment in TCF-Minneapolis Bank’s unilateral closing of the bank accounts of at least 22 UMN Iranian students citing possible violations of U.S. trade sanctions. As the students have not engaged in any illegal banking transactions, this appeared to be a case of discrimination based on national origin and unfounded “preemptive” stereotypes. As university faculty who research social practices and ideas, we recognized that TCF’s actions, whether intentional or not, fit precisely within the definition of xenophobia.  In other words, allowing a person’s social and group category as the determining factor in assessing an individual without regard to his or her actual actions is textbook prejudice.
 
 Second, we are perhaps even more dismayed by how TCF has handled the process and the aftermath of its actions - the holiday timing of the letters, the lack of empathy and compassion, the misplaced justifications, the dearth of case-by-case review, to name a few. Beyond being “tone-deaf,” we are struck by how distant and anti-social its response has been. . . .it takes little imagination to understand that the imposed closing of an important facet of one’s life can generate feelings of immense anxiety, betrayal, anger, injustice, dislocation, insult, and injury. 

 In this light, we – part of a growing group of faculty and staff members at the University of Minnesota – will switch our direct deposit from TCF Bank into a different institution and/or will close our accounts. We no longer feel comfortable having TCF be the responsible institution for our deposits. . . . . 

We also believe that institutions can change; and that all individuals who work within institutions do not necessary agree with a particular course of action. We hope that you will share this letter with other decision-makers at TCF and attempt to reform some of the culture that led to these unfortunate acts.

Deeply influenced by the American media's blind acceptance of anti-Iran "reports" that are unsourced, or leaked by friends of Israel's hawk government, somebody or bodies in that Minnesota bank jumped to the isle of conclusions and took inappropriate, perhaps even illegal actions.

The pity of it is that all over America, you merely have to cross the street to find similar attitudes and willingness to accuse on the basis of nationality, skin color or religious beliefs.

It has become The American Way and it only drags the country further down.

Cling to This New Identity, Barry

This was the week that Dr. Kidglove performed his most thrilling stunt: stepping into a phone booth, ripping off his street clothes, and emerging as Captain Courageous.

Staring the NRA bully straight in the rifle-scope, he told Congress to pass legislation banning so-called assault weapons and limiting the size of gun magazines to no more than ten rounds.  Then he issued 23 presidential declarations intended to militate against further mass slaying in public places in this country.

We do applaud his noble goals.  Now let us see if he achieves them -- or if he reverts to mild-mannered, easily -intimidated Dr. Kidglove the next time House Republicans say "Boo!" The Casper Milquetoast Democrats in Congress have already warned that the laws Capt. Courageous demanded might be very hard to pass. Poor dears.

Some in the media have praised Capt. Courageous for offering the boldest effort ever to control gun violence in the United States.  That's a matter of perspective.  Ten-round magazines would mean that school shooters could kill only ten youngsters, max, considerably fewer than the shooters at Newtown or Blacksburg. If numbers are all you care about, this would be progress.

I hope the round-heeled crowd in Washington gets behind Capt. Courageous on this one.  Putting the entire Obama agenda into law would be a good first step toward sanity regarding armed citizens in the U.S.

Generously conceding moral neutrality to the practice of hunting wild game in a modern, civilized nation, the rest of the NRA gun crowd are, as the New York Post put it, nut cases. 

From its inception, after all, the Second Amendment was a sop to slave owners, hardly the most admirable segment of the inchoate nation that became the United States of America. Brilliant as they were, prescient as they were in writing most of the document that is our Constitution, even James Madison and Thomas Jefferson were large-scale slave-owners.  And "the militia" whose maintenance justifies the ironclad right of "citizens" to bear arms was in fact the militias of the southern states whose sole mission was to suppress any attempt at insurrection by slaves who outnumbered whites in broad swaths of the south, and to run down escaped slaves and bring them back to the lessons of the lash.  The NRA's precious "right" to its private arsenals is writ in human blood.

Capt. Courageous, legal scholar and history buff, surely is aware of all of this. What irony, what travesty, if the nation's first black president were to cave on these issues, betraying the legacy of his forefathers.

Americans are buying guns at a near-record rate since Newtown.  They're falling over themselves to join the NRA. They're nut cases.

It is time for government to save them from themselves.  Keep on being Capt. Courageous, Barack Obama.  Kidglove has has already caved to our lesser angels far too often. This isn't about budgets; it's about lives.

Doc Looks for Rx for the Filibuster

Doc and I were having lunch after our weekly tennis match.  "Tell me," he began as our heart-healthy fare was served, "are we going to get that filibuster thing fixed?"

It was good to have something to talk about other than the lies being told about Obamacare. 

"Well," I said.  "There's a lot of money working against it."

"There's always a lot of money against anything that's good for people," he said. "It's the American Way.

"The filibuster has never been a good thing: look at who's done it and why.  Remember those pictures of Dixiecrat Senators reading the Manhattan telephone book on the Senate floor to filibuster against the voting rights act? But at least back then they by gawd had to keep talking, had to actually filibuster in order to filibuster. Sooner or later they'd run out of spit, or patience, or talkers.  That was the hope, anyway.

"Now with the silent filibuster, any damned nutcase of a right-wing Senator can block any bills or presidential nominations on a whim, or out of sheer contrariness. One cock-eyed son of a gun from Alabama or Mississippi can bottle up legislation to help 315 million of his fellow Americans.  It's obscene.

"You've got this guy Vitter from Louisiana, single-handedly holds off the confirmation vote  on EPA appointments in order to delay scientific assessments on the health risks of formaldehyde. Just happens that some of his biggest campaign contributors sell formaldehyde. You've got Mitch McConnell, top Repuglican in the Senate, filibustering on behalf of oil subsidies, filibustering to block efforts to mitigate the mortgage crisis, and filibustering against campaign disclosure reforms. Every damn one of 'em designed to help real people and opposed by fat cat campaign donors to ol' Mitchy-witchy.  You've got this guy Shelby from Alabama, who is 85 per cent owned by Northrup Grumman.  Richy boy puts a damn blanket hold on every Obama nomination in order to force the Administration to give a big fat contract to Northrup Grumman to build a new air fueling tanker. You've got Honest John McCain his very own self blocking a Labor department nominee the U.S. Chamber of Commerce didn't like, in exchange for the chamber's withholding money support from McCain's Tea Party opponent in the primary election. You've got FedEx pouring a mountain of money into  Bob Corker's Senate campaign in Tennessee whereupon that good ol'  boy obligingly filibusters the Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization bill in order to demand a policy that prevents FedEx drivers from unionizing. You've got Mary Landrieu, the Senator from Exxon-Mobile-Chevron by way of Louisiana, blocking the vote on a senior OMB nomination until President Kidglove caves and allows more oil drilling in the Gulf after Deepwater Horizon defiled the thing for ages.

"And so you've got the so-called mainstream media listening to guys like Steven Duffield.  Steven who? Duffield.  Big time lobbyist.  Says those damned Senate Liberals "want to gut the filibuster."  Damn right they do. If real rules reform takes place, Duffield stands to lose about a quarter of a million dollars a year from selling -- yes, selling -- holds and filibusters to his corporate clients.  'You require advocacy,' he told them, 'before those Senators -- many of them backbench Republicans -- who may exercise their prerogatives to delay or obstruct.'

"You've got Investors Business Daily -- you know whose corner they're in! -- soberly taking the word of another big-time lobbyist, Martin Gold, that even the modest rules reform now on the table would be 'unprecedented and unwise.'  Humbug! What's unprecedented is the way Repuglicans are using the filibuster.  Almost 390 times just during the period Harry Reid has been majority leader.  In all the years Lyndon Johnson was majority leader he had to deal with just one filibuster.  One!  Unwise? Sure, for Gold's clients: Qualcomm, Amazon.com, BAE Systems and a clutch of similarly altruistic corporations.

"So now I'm asking you, my editor friend, what  if anything will be done about this?  What have you got to say?"

I replied, "Doc, my friend, you've said it all. Lunch is on me this week."

Little Boys With Real Machine Guns

I still remember the Christmas when the local Walgreen's had a window display of toys including a realistic wooden model of the machine guns John Wayne  toted in his U.S. Marines movies.

My friend Ron Ellis and I really coveted those things. We had outgrown Santa Clause and one of us remembered his Mom saying those "awful guns" were overpriced,  so neither of us was particularly optimistic.  But we'd walk past that window display every day thinking how great it would be to run through the woods with such a real-looking weapon.  The imaginary "Japs" lurking in the weeds wouldn't stand a chance.

The store cut prices by half on its unsold toys on the day before Christmas, and our parents relented and we got our guns.  Couldn't wait to go out to the woods and hide behind trees and shoot "Japs."  Did so for a day or two, swaggering like the Duke,  feeling like big shots, tough guys, but ere long the simple noisemaker on the wooden guns broke, and we had to shout "blam blam  blam" or something when we shot "Japs," and pretty soon it wan't such great fun having wooden machine guns, and our killing sprees ended.

That was my last infatuation with guns. Same for most of my friends.  The war to end all wars ended, Johnny came marching home, there were blue birds over the white cliffs of Dover and real-life sports heroes replaced John Wayne.  And then, one day, the little boys of Harrison Street were young men, striving wherever young men strove those days to be ready to deal with the Real World.

In the Real World you learned to respect the rights of others, including those of different colors or creeds. You learned to respect the law, and obey it, and you learned how to work to change the law if it was unjust or unfair.  You learned about things like perspective and priorities and equality.  You learned about prejudice and hate and bullying.

And you learned there were those who never did grow up, who never did outgrow the coveting of guns, whose insecurity required phallic trappings and bullying comrades.  They tended to gather together, these little boys of middle age, and bring their sons and nephews with them, in places like the National Rifle Association, and ad hoc militias, at shooting ranges and in the great outdoors, toting their heat. Sometimes they called themselves "hunters" and"outdoorsmen" but in reality they were would-be murderers who mostly did their killing in fantasies.  A few  -- far, far too many -- fulfilled their fantasies against real people, in shopping malls, parking lots, churches, government buildings, army posts and schools.

Fort Hood.  Columbine.  Sandy Hook.  Blacksburg. 

From their intellectual puberty, these monsters of arrested development shouted their tortured Second Amendment logic, their posturing of patriotism, their utter nonsense about their "rights" to have and to use firearms, until even right wing propaganda sheets like Rupert Murdoch's New York Post called them "nuts." On the front page!

"Nuts" they are, but dangerous ones.

Less Than Two Weeks

After Sandy Hook

WEBSTER, N.Y. — An ex-con set a car and a house ablaze in his lakeside neighborhood to lure firefighters, then opened fire on them, killing two, engaging in a shootout with police and committing suicide while several homes burned. Authorities used an armored vehicle to evacuate the area.

The gunman fired at the four firefighters when they arrived shortly after 5:30 a.m. at the blaze in Webster, a suburb of Rochester on Lake Ontario, town Police Chief Gerald Pickering said. The first police officer who arrived chased the suspect and exchanged gunfire, authorities said.

Police say he lay in wait outdoors for the firefighters' arrival, then opened fire probably with a rifle and from atop an earthen berm, Pickering said.

"It does appear it was a trap," he said.

U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice was unfit to become Secretary of State, but not because of Benghazi, as is clear in the newly released report by an independent panel investigating the terrorist attack that killed four Americans, including the ambassador, in Libya.

The report won't stop crackpots like Sen. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, a science-denying creationist, from continuing to blather the party line.

In fact, Rice's disqualification for the office was her huge stockholdings in Canadian corporations that stand to profit greatly if the Keystone XL pipeline is built.  The Secretary of State has the power of final determination of the fate of the pipeline.

That, of course, doesn't bother the Republicans, for whom conflict of interest is a way of life.  With hands always open for corporate cash, eagerly embracing legislation crafted by corporate lobbyists, kissing the boots of the biggest bankers, the GOP is oblivious to that silly thing called ethics.

The investigators' report on Benghazi came down hard on senior State Department officials.  "Systematic failures and leadership and management deficiencies at senior levels within two bureaus of the State Department resulted in a Special Mission security posture that was inadequate for Benghazi and grossly inadequate to deal with the attack that took place," the panel said.

However, the board ruled that no individual officials ignored or violated their duties and recommended no disciplinary action. It recommended that poor performance by senior managers should be grounds for disciplinary actions in the future.

Buried in most media accounts of the panel's report was the fact that Congress' own parsimony was a major factor in the security lapses in Benghazi. The panel found that budget constraints in the past had led some management officials to emphasize savings over security, including rejecting numerous requests from the Benghazi mission and the embassy in Tripoli for enhanced protection.

House and Senate negotiators on a pending defense bill on Tuesday agreed to fund another 1,000 Marines at embassy security worldwide, locking the barn door after the horse has been stolen.

What the report does not disclose is the source of the so-called "talking points" that Rice and others in the administration used when addressing the media in the immediate aftermath of he Benghazi killings.  Those points said the violence at the consulate began with protests over an anti-Muslim movie made in the U.S. The investigators determined that this was not true, that the attack was a terrorist plot from the outset.

Did the falsehood originate with the CIA? With its director, David Petraeus?  Two of the four slain Americans were independent CIA contractors.  A mysterious CIA compound -- a black hole for torture? -- stands near the consulate where the men were slain.

What was the CIA's role in all of this?

Our Worst President Strikes Again

Barack Hussein Obama, you have sealed your fate in history.  As long as a single sane, humanitarian voice remains to speak truth in this benighted land, you will go down as the very worst president the nation has ever had.

I don't know what motivated your latest capitulation to the handmaidens of corporate America, but it certainly was not your vaunted intellect.  Only an utter fool would think that our sick economy can be turned around by taking from the poor and the needy and giving to the rich.  But that is exactly what you have done in your concessions to House Speaker Boehner regarding the scarecrow perniciously called the "fiscal cliff."

My private opinion is that you are driven by cowardice and a desperate, sick need to prove yourself worthy of your high office to the elite, the oligarchs, the warmakers and the oppressors of the common people -- the relative handful who really run the country.

If I live to be a hundred, I cannot wash away the filth from the hand that cast my ballot for your second term.  I bought the canard that a vote for one of the worthy third-party candidates would in effect be a vote for Mitt Romney, and that somehow a Romney presidency would be even worse than a second Obama term.  You are peas in the same pod.  Liars both, although you disguise your lies more skillfully than the man who challanged you. Warmakers both, but you make a vile mockery of the Nobel Prize that was undeservedly conferred upon you.  Killer of women and children with your drones.  Torturer.  Repealer of the Bill of Rights.  Spyer upon your people.  Hider of ugly and terrible secrets.

Now you and your fellow connivers will market your latest sell-out of the common people as an "adjustment" in "entitlements" rather than what it is: viciously slashing  the safety net that millions upon millions of Americans need in order to eat, breathe, have modest shelter over their heads, get treatment for their most pressing illnesses. You would let the modest tax relief for middle-class wage-erarners lapse, while coddling the millionaires and billionaires -- many of whom themselves vainly challenged you to raise their taxes!

How can you stoop so low?  How can you allow yourself to grovel at the feet of right wing extremists who have no interest other than the obscene profits of their corporate masters?  How can you callously urinate on not just the dreams and aspirations, but the quotidian needs of the very people who elected you?

Never has a man so besmirched the highest office in the land.  The crimes of your predecessor pale in comparison to your betrayals of the masses, of basic human ethics, of human rights, of civil liberties, of truth and decency.

You, sir, are a disgrace to your race.  The human race.
